GEOINT Certificates for Aspiring and Experienced Professionals

Penn State offers two Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT) certificates to choose from, based on your level of academic readiness for the coursework:

  • Post-baccalaureate Certificate Program in GEOINT Applications (12 credits, Code: GEOAPP)
  • Graduate Certificate in GEOINT Analytics (13 credits, Code: GEOINT)

Information about GEOINT and each of these programs is provided here to help you to determine which of these certificates is right for your professional needs.

Business, government, and non-governmental organizations look for graduates skilled in geospatial intelligence applications and spatial analytics. Penn State’s online GEOINT certificate programs provide you with fundamental or advanced knowledge of the key geographic concepts, geospatial problem-solving techniques, and geographic information technologies to confront a wide array of professional challenges, including location intelligence in business planning, disaster response, emergency management, and military operations.

Post-baccalaureate Certificate in GEOINT Applications (Code: GEOAPP) - for Aspiring Professionals

The Post-baccalaureate Certificate in Geospatial Intelligence Applications provides a foundation in geospatial intelligence for the aspiring professional who has little or no experience in geography, geographic information systems, and remote sensing. The program addresses the theory, methodologies, techniques, and ethics in the professional application of geospatial intelligence. The curriculum integrates geospatial information science and analytic thinking in a synergistic manner.

The Certificate in Geospatial Intelligence Applications requires 12 credits of online coursework, including:

  • GEOG 882 (Geographic Foundations of Geospatial Intelligence – 3 credits)
  • GEOG 482 (Nature of Geographic Information – 3 credits)
  • GEOG 483 (Problem-solving with GIS – 3 credits)
  • GEOG 480 (Exploring Imagery and Elevation Data in GIS Applications – 3 credits)

To apply to this program, you must have either (1) a baccalaureate degree from a regionally-accredited U.S. institution or (2) a tertiary (postsecondary) degree that is deemed comparable to a four-year bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited U.S. institution.

Graduate Certificate in GEOINT Analytics (Code: GEOINT) - for Experienced Professionals

The Graduate Certificate in Geospatial Intelligence Analytics is for geospatial intelligence professionals with experience in geographic information systems and remote sensing who are only able to participate part-time and at a distance, while maintaining professional responsibilities. The program promotes sound theory, methodologies, techniques, ethics, and best practices in the professional application of geospatial intelligence. The 13-credit curriculum integrates the geospatial information science and intelligence disciplines in a synergistic manner. The program is well suited for the geospatial intelligence professional serving outside the continental US.

The Graduate Certificate in Geospatial Intelligence Analytics is a part of the Master of Geographic Information Systems (MGIS) in Geospatial Intelligence Option. Specifically, the 13 credits earned in the Geospatial Intelligence Analytics certificate may be applied toward the 35-credit Master of Geographic Information Systems.

The Graduate Certificate in Geospatial Intelligence Analytics requires 13 credits of online coursework that integrates geospatial information science and intelligence analysis disciplines.

  • GEOG 882 (Geographic Foundations of Geospatial Intelligence – 3 credits)
  • GEOG 883 (Remote Sensing Analysis and Applications – 3 credits)
  • GEOG 884 (Geographic Information Systems for the Geospatial Intelligence Professional – 3 credits)
  • GEOG 885 (Advanced Analytic Methods for Geospatial Intelligence – 3 credits) or an approved elective
  • GEOG 594A (Seminar in Geospatial Intelligence (1 credit capstone experience)

To apply to the program, you must have either (1) a baccalaureate degree from a regionally-accredited U.S. institution or (2) a tertiary (postsecondary) degree that is deemed comparable to a four-year bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited U.S. institution.

USGIF Accreditation

Penn State’s GEOINT certificates are fully accredited by the United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF). USGIF’s accreditation program was established in 2005 to encourage higher education institutions to develop academic certificates that prepare students to advance the geospatial intelligence field. When you earn a GEOINT certificate from Penn State, you will also receive a certificate from the USGIF.

Flexibility

All courses are offered online and instructor-led by Penn State faculty. You will complete weekly assignments, submit projects, take quizzes, and receive feedback from faculty just as you would in a comparable face-to-face course, but with the convenience of doing so from your preferred location and you can complete your assignments at times that work around your schedule. Our Geospatial Intelligence courses are taught five times a year in 10-week terms. With two sessions that partially overlap in fall and spring, and one session in the summer, you have the most flexibility possible to complete your certificate at your preferred pace. You can choose to schedule your courses without any overlap, or take as many courses as possible to finish sooner.

Semester Overlap

Taking just one course during each of the five terms, you can complete either certificate in one year or less.

Take a Look at Our Classes

We encourage you to familiarize yourself with Penn State’s online course work before applying to our program. Visit the Open Educational Resources website to preview content from our geospatial intelligence courses. As these are graduate level programs, our courses follow the university's graduate-level grading system in terms of acceptable grades. If transferring credits, the grades must meet the requirements of the program in which the courses are being transferred into.

Professional Development Courses

GEOINT professionals looking to continue their education with one or more classes can take individual courses to fulfill continuing professional development requirements. If you only want to take one course, you don’t need to enroll in a full Certificate program. If you decide later to pursue a Certificate, your credits earned from individual GEOINT courses can be easily applied toward that credential.

Career Opportunities for Graduates

Penn State’s online certificates in GEOINT can help you start or advance your career as a:

  • Geospatial intelligence analyst
  • Imagery analyst
  • Intelligence image analyst
  • Homeland security professional
  • Business intelligence analyst
